ATHANASE GONELLI, OFM Cap

Luigi Gonnelli was born on Sunday the 11 February 1923 at Cattognano di Comano (Massa Carrara) Italy. He made his religious profession on the 8 September 1940 at Fidenza and was ordained a priest on the l March 1947 at Minozzo (Reggio Emilia.) He arrived in Australia three years later on the 24 or the 29 January 1950 by ship.

In Australia he was one year at Leichhardt as Chaplain of Migrants. He then moved to Melbourne (51/52) as Chaplain and Editor of "L'Angelo Della Famiglia". Then he came back to Leichhardt for 5 years as Migrant Chaplain. In 1957 he was 4 months in Adelaide as a chaplain for Migrants. Then he was sent to Harvey in Western Australia as Parish Administrator for 7 months. He followed this by being superior in Adelaide (59/62) for 4 years. In 1962 he went to Plumpton Seminary for two years. There he was Guardian and Editor of "La Fiamma", a paper that he was to be Editor of for 11 years. In 1964 he came back to Leichhardt where he has been Parish Priest for 5 months and Guardian of the Community for 7 times. During this time he was also a councilor to the Custos and Provincial for 5 terms. In all he has served the Italian Community here in Leichhardt Sydney for more than 40 years. Since 1964 he has been continuously in Leichhardt.

For his extraordinary service to the Italian people arriving here in Australia as migrants he was made a Cavalieri. This is the Italian version of a Knighthood.
