BR LAM VU, OFM Cap

[Early in 2001, Lam completed his Novitiate and is now undertaking post-Novitiate studies.]

I was born in Vung Tau, South Vietnam in 1971 and the second youngest of nine children. I came to Australia when I was 8 years old. After completing a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Queensland, I worked for 3 years for an Architectural firm in Tweed Heads and Brisbane. The other side of my life was actively involved in a Vietnamese Youth Group and playing sports.

As an enthusiastic architectural student my desire was to become a well know Architect. Priesthood was beyond my list of goals. Nevertheless, my dream was terminated when my brother announced to my family that he was joining a religious order. The news shocked me deeply. However, it is from that moment that I began to recognise the presence of God and his calling.

The Capuchin charism appealed to me from the first moment I saw them and was the prime reason for my decision to join them. Their simplicity was first revealed to me by Br Tung when he was a novice. Living the Capuchin spirit in simplicity, poverty and fraternity was all that I was looking for, and fulfils my desire of being closer to God.
