New Biography of Capuchin Bishop
A biography of Bishop Torreggiani will be launched in the Armidale
Cathedral Centre with a presentation by the biographer and speakers from
Armidale and
Sydney on 18 February 2004.
This article appeared in the Queensland "Catholic Leader" (11-1-04.) reporting
on the publishing of the biography of Bishop Torreggiani by our own Br. Patrick
Colbourne OFM Cap.
Called "The Angel of Armidale", Bishop Torreggiani led the diocese
from 1879 to 1904. He was an Italian Capuchin who learnt English while ministering
to Irish coal miners in Wales.
He was sent to Australia to minister to predominantly Irish miners, shearers,
railway workers and farm hands who were pioneering settlements in northern
NSW.
At the time there was tension between the English religious clergy and
the Irish diocesan clergy. He was appointed to be a buffer between the
parties.
Bishop Torreggiani later survived an assassination attempt. The bullet
missed him but left a hole in his chasuble. He died on January 28, 1904.
Celebrations will be held in St Mary and St Joseph's Cathedral with the
main event being a Mass led by Bishop Luc Matthys on February 18.
The Australian province of the Capuchin Friars, including Brisbane Auxiliary
Bishop Joseph Oudeman; the order's Minister General from Rome, Br John
Corriveau; the Capuchin archivist, Br Renato Lupi from the Marches, Italy;
and Br Anthony
McDowell from the Great Britain province, will travel to Armidale for the
celebrations.
Two German Ursuline nuns will also attend. Bishop Torreggiani introduced
many religious congregations to Armidale, including the German Ursuline nuns.
Among the items on display in the Diocesesan Centre will be the chasuble,
complete with bullet hole, the bishop´s mitre, stole, burse and crosier.
The latter was carried by Bishop Oudeman, the first Capuchin Bishop in Australia
in 99 years, at his Episcopal ordination in Brisbane 11 February 2003.
A biography of the bishop will also be launched in the Diocesesan Centre
with a presentation by the biographer and speakers from Armidale and Sydney.
The book also covers the caoming of the railway to Armidale, the expansion
of Catholic education and the establishment of many parishes throughout
the diocese
