NewsAffiliation to the Order: Mrs Monica Dobbins29 February 2004 Special CeremonyIn a very rare ceremony, the Capuchin province of Australia has recognised Monica Dobbins of Wynnum Brisbane for her fraternal love and service to the friars of the province.
Our Minister Provincial Br Julian Messina OFM Cap, affiliated “Ma” Dobbins, as the young friars affectionately called her, to the Australian province of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin on Sunday 15th February. Our Minister General Most Rev Brother John Corriveau OFM Cap, was present for this special ceremony and preached the homily at the 9:00am Mass in Guardian Angels Church Wynnum Queensland. Our Definitor General Br Joseph Nacua OFM Cap, who represents the friars of the South Asian Pacific Region of our Order was also present with a number of friars who came from all over Australia for this ceremony to welcome Monica into affiliation with the Order. Mrs Dobbins served the fraternity at St Laurence of Brindisi Friary at Wynnum North, which was first a Theology house from 1957 to 1970 and then the Novitiate of the Province from 1970 to 1996. During much of this time “Ma” and her family lived in what became the Guest House of the friary and in return she did the cooking for the friars. However, her friendship ranged far beyond scones and Anzac biscuits and she could be seen outside of the Masses at Wynnum Central and Nazareth House selling raffle tickets for the Friary Fete during most of the year. When she was not bailing up parishioners to buy tickets after Mass she was in the street of Wynnum Central shopping district cajoling friends and passers-by into supporting the friars. With “Ma” cooking, the kitchen of the friary became a very special place for the young friars. In the early days when things were extremely strict either “Ma” or her husband Bill were the source for news of the latest cricket or football scores. A certain down to earth wisdom and a collection of stories of the antics of the friars of the past, made “Ma” a source of consolation for many of the young men who came to make their Novitiate at St Laurence “Monastery as it was also called. She greatly added herself to the fiorette (Little Stories) of the place. No one who was there will ever forget her driving lessons at 50 years of age or her little dog called “Pants.” A member of the Secular Franciscan Fraternity of Wynnum Mrs Dobbins was always to be seen at various meetings of Committees and at the celebrations of the friars like Professions and Ordinations. A simple down to earth person she has long been admired by the friars as outstanding among all the “little people” who have helped us over the years despite our failures and been there cheering when we got it right. The very highest award that the friars can bestow on a person is to make them a member of our Order. A person who is affiliated with our Order shares in a special way in all our Masses, prayers, penances and other good works performed by the friars of our province and on their death the friars offer the customary Masses and prayers they would for a friar. The following is the list of people who have been Affiliated to our Order in Australia:
