St Laurence Theological College/Novitiate in Wynnum North
29 February 2004
ALLOTMENTS FOR
SALE
Nothing of the buildings or the fence remains after the demolition of St
Laurence “Monastery.”
Now only the rolling green lawns go all the way down to the natural runoff
gully at the end of the property. It is as if everything has simply been erased.
The gully has been cleaned out completely and drained. It will be given to
the Council as part of the Nature Reserve above the high water mark. Only the
trees remain where the friary and guesthouse were.
There are two streets on the property Brindisi Street in memory of
the Capuchin Doctor of the Church St Laurence of Brindisi, who was patron of
the Theological College/Novitiate and Alverna Street in remembrance
of St Francis and the Stigmata Province of New Jersey USA, who first sent Capuchin
friars to Wynnum in 1946. The 16 allotments on the property already have FOR
SALE signs on them.
Please say a prayer for all those whose memories were and are still tied up
with the history of this place. Like so many other places in Australia where
we Capuchins have left behind memories, to leave the property at Wynnum North
was a very difficult decision of the friars, not only because so many memories
were tied up in its history, but also because of the wonderful support in time
and energy of the people over so many years of its existence. It was for many
a special place. We pray that those who live there at Wynnum North in the future
may be truly blessed by all the Eucharistic Celebrations and the many prayers
of the friars and people over the years.
