Investiture of Novices 28-11-2004 Allison Park, Pa. U.S.A.
The goal of the Novitiate is an integrating process whereby one realises a synthesis, consciously and coherently, of all the elements of his person in the light of the ideal he has chosen. He does this in order to better respond to the divine call of Jesus and so enters into a personal relationship with him. - Is the Lord real to him in his personal prayer life? - Is he convinced Christ is calling him to our way of life? - Does he desire to live out his life as a Capuchin? - Is he willing to give himself generously to this way of life? “Conscious of their own responsibility, the novices are to collaborate actively with their director so that they may faithfully respond to the grace of a divine vocation” (Can.652.3).
Br James Grant receiving the habit from Br David Nestler – Novice Master Letter from the Novices The Investiture ceremony was a memorable experience. This was made more so by the fact that our Provincial, Br. Julian Messina, was able to be present to support us. Fr David Nestler, our novice director, spoke passionately in his sermon about the great Capuchin history that, upon being invested with the habit, we are entering into. He spoke of the names of some of the many great Capuchin saints such as Lawrence of Brindisi, Conrad of Pazam, Felix of Cantalice and Leopoldo Mandic which gave us a profound sense of the rich tradition we are inheriting. The six pre-novices from Beacon were joined by the two Puerto Rican postulants to make up our novitiate class of eight. It took a few days to get used to some of the practicalities of getting around in a habit. After a few days of orientation we began an eight-day directed retreat. This was a very grace-filled and fruitful experience for both of us. We had a lot of time for silence and prayer and were able to get to know our spiritual directors, meeting with them every day. We have now begun our apostolates. James is working with Meals on Wheels and at Maguire Memorial Home (children with mental and physical disabilities). Thomas is working at Senior Connections assisting elderly people in their homes. We also visit two elderly friars at the nearby nursing home. And yes, it has started snowing - we've already had two mornings of being outside shovelling snow at 5am - an interesting American experience. Pax et Bonum, Br's James & Thomas
