Ordination to the Priesthood of Br John Spiteri

Br. John with his mother, Lucy (right).

ON the evening of Friday, 10th July, our brother John Spiteri was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Geoffrey Robinson in the Church of St. Benedict in Smithfield, Sydney.

The ordination was the finale of a week long assembly of the Capuchin friars at our friary in Plumpton. Consequently almost the entire Australian Capuchin province was able to be with John at his ordination. This combined with a large church filled with John’s many friends and family made the ordination liturgy a very moving affair.

John has been a Capuchin since 1973 and has ministered in varied places. People came to celebrate with John from Griffith, Brisbane, Melbourne, Plumpton and Adelaide – all places where John has ministered and found his way into the hearts of the people.

With such a wealth of experience behind him, we Capuchins are very confident that John will make a truly great friar priest. John, our prayers are with you. May God bless you abundantly in your new ministry.

After his ordination John will return to Hawthorn Melbourne to finish his studies and begin his priestly ministry. John’s vocation story can be found here.
