NewsFranciscan Retreat—Our Relationship with God. On the weekend of 12th, 13th and 14th of March this year a Franciscan retreat was held in Brisbane at the Mercy Conference Centre in Bardon Brisbane. The Centre is situated at the foot of Mt Coot-tha surrounded by lush eucalypt forest with plenty of space to enjoy the peaceful surroundings with a beautiful view that stretched all the way to Morton Bay; an idyllic setting for a Franciscan retreat. The retreat was lead by the Br John Cooper the Provincial of the Capuchins and attended by other friars and our postulants, Lam, Nathan and Shane. Thirty attended the retreat from all walks of life. The retreat was titled "A Reflection on Mystical Prayer and Contemplation leading to a Relationship with God. Over the series of seven talks that Br John gave, he gradually unfolded the steps of our spiritual journey into a deeper and more intimate relationship with our Triune God. His talks were based in the Spirituality of St Francis and St Bonaventure and drawing on 800 years of Franciscan spirituality. This was further backed up with the Fathers of the Church and other spiritual giants of our Church. Br John presented a rich tapestry of examples of how the journey has been trod by those who have achieved a deep and personal relationship with God. This was intertwined with a myriad of stories and examples from his own life experience. Br John is a dynamic speaker who has at his disposal some intriguing techniques to get his point across. These include producing a bow and arrow (which is used!), brandishing a medieval sword used by El Cid, playing the piano and tuning his guitar, not to forget the large hatpin, this certainly gets his point across! All are used very effectively to make his message concrete and more easily grasped. All who attended were certainly enriched by the experience and hoped that it would be an annual event. 15 March 1999 Archived News items:2001
