"Sad to say Fr Sebastian perished in the fire!"
The Fire Chief in charge
of the fire drill at Wynnum North conveyed this sad news to Br John Myers
on Wednesday 6th June. (No doubt this mythical friar died because he could
not
find the key to the door at the end of the corridor to the outside stairs.)
John Myers gives us the story:
"On Wednesday at 11:00am St Laurence Friary at Wynnum North was invaded
by four fire engines and two fire squad cars for a "practice drill" for
an examination of about 20 student- trainee firemen.
About two months ago two men from the Fire and Rescue Team asked if they could
use our facilities for the practice drill. (No doubt a pay back for not giving
them back their fire bell, which is now the Angelus bell of the friary.) They
took several photos of the friary and then computerized a fire to the building,
which made it look like the real thing: the friary on fire. During that first
visit they told us to get rid of any valuables so we relocated the statues,
pictures, etc and we notified the neighbours so that they would not panic.
When they arrived, they spent half an hour for a briefing session to the student
firemen (in their 20’s & 30’s) then they set up an "Observation
Communication Post" manned by two blokes with mobile phones down near
the barbecue. I was asked to vacate the building and invited to observe the
procedure drill. An hour later they informed me that they were looking for
a "Fr Sebastian" who was still in the building and could not be located.
(They had two dummies for the practice run.) Sad to say: Fr Sebastian perished
in the fire. He was found on the 2nd floor of the building in an office probably
trying to save his computer.
After the practice drill they told me it was very successful. They had one
request before they left and that was to ask if they could do more drills since
our friary is excellent for drills and examinations for their students. The
thing they really like about the property is that they can spread out their
hoses and the building has almost no one living in it whereas Nazareth House
is a little difficult with over 140 residents, who might panic a little. So
I thought I better ask the Provincial before I said yes and if the answer is
'yes' they will have their next drill on the 21st of June."
